"cosmetics?"

LAST EDITED ON Oct-23-06 AT 01:11 PM (CDST)

How long could the herpes virus live on cosmetics items? (eg in a jar of foundation, skin cream, etc.) Has this ever been tested in a lab as far as you know?

In general, though, the virus is rather fragile and does not live very long outside the body. I'd think that cosmetics might well contain substances that would not be "friendly" to the virus. It's an interesting question, though. Is there a specific situation you had in mind?

I saw something on the Today show where they did testing on the cosmetic counters, and they found all kinds of nasties living on those. They didn't mention herpes, but honestly - after what you'll read here, herpes will be the least of your worries.

You would actually be able to detect hsv dna for up to a day probably afterwards on the cosmetic however once the virus is away from body temperature - it doesn't transmit well. Like Jess said - herpes from sharing cosmetics would be the least of my worries. I myself NEVER use those testers on the cosmetic counter - that's just trouble waiting to happen.

The first step in stopping the perceived stigma about genital herpes - is to stop believing in it yourself
