"having HSV1 or 2 giving immunity to the other?"

   hey all..
i'm not on here much but i'm the one back a couple months ago that had the boyfriend make the dumb comment about the Valtrex commercial...lol

so things have been going great with him and I and its been almost 5 months we have been together so i'm thankful for that. soooo recently he went to the Dr for his annual checkup and had all the usual tests done..(incl HSV bloodwork) and he got a letter in the mail last thursday and completely FREAKED. so he didn't contact me for 3 days and i had no idea why and i started freaking cause i had no idea what was up, he didn't say anything just said he couldn't talk..so i'm thinking someone in the family is ill..or...an accident..or...who knows!?

so finally tonight he calls me and tells me about this letter..that he has herpes and its been a rough weekend dealing with it and is kind of implying that i gave it to him...before the Dr appt we had only had sex 1 time and used a condom and i haven't had an OB for almost 6 years so i know in my mind that the chances are pretty slim he got it from me...
so i said babe read me the paper and tell me exactly what it says.. he says blah blah HSV 1!! and i have HSV 2. so i'm like oohhh its totally different!! so i educate him about the differences etc... and all that stuff and how they work..telling him if he is still confused to maybe book another appt with the Dr to learn more. he says he feels better about it since i helped him understand more..

i've gone off on tangent here but the reason for my post is that i have been doing some research on the idea that if you have type 1 your body may have antibodies built up to protect you/give immunity to getting type 2 and vice versa..

does anyone have any other info on this topic? i found it very interesting but wondering how valid this claim is and how many studies have been performed on it...

just thinking if its somewhat true this will give him and i some further confidence that we will not infect each other with each others type..although i know there is always that small chance. it would just be nice to have that extra knowledge

   Hi there islandchica.

I've asked this question as well and I believe the answer was No? Having HSV1 doesn't offer protection against HSV2. Or, maybe it was a little protection? I THINK I read recently on here that having one type, before acquiring another, will help keep the other mild. For example, if someone has OHSV1 and develops GHSV2, the type 2 genitally will likely be a milder case.

I'm sure someone will come along with more definitive answers. But, if you don't get replies right away, you might want to post this in support where more people will see it.

I'm glad things have been going great with him! It's nice to hear your update!

I am not an expert here but I have been here long enough to have learned a few things and I will try to answer your question.

Having HSVI antibodies (meaning you have had this for a while and this is not a new infection) should protect you from getting it anywhere else on your body. Example. . . someone with HSVI receives oral sex from someone that has OHSVI, they 'should' be protected from getting it genitally. If you already have HSVI then IT WILL NOT protect you from acquiring HSVII like having HSVII will protect you from getting HSVI but already having HSVI will help you have a milder OB if you do catch HSVII. In easier terms: Having HSVII should protect you from HSVI. Having HSVI will not prevent HSVII but should help in a milder OB of HSVII.

If I did not explain it correctly, I am sure a more knowledgable person will correct me.

So he has type 1 and 2?

Can you get his results? We can help interpret them and see if he was tested right, if they were read right, or if maybe he has a false pos on the type 2.

That's a good idea anyway, to post his exact results.

But I'm reading it that he flipped out b/c he saw positive for HSV-I and thought that meant Herpes. ONLY HSV-I, I thought. And the O.P. only has HSV-II, so she knows she didn't just give him the Type I.

At least that's what I thought she meant in her post.

Oh so he has type 1, you have type 2, and he is saying you gave it to him?

Not possible.

Unless I'm still confused lol.

I think he thought she gave it to him when he was focused on his positive HSV diagnosis. Once she got him to talk about it, and talked out the HSV1 part, I think she was able to tell him he didn't get that from her. That's how I read it anyway.

Interesting situation for you to go thru with him. I would think he'll read up more on herpes now. I would have thought he did, but if he did I think he would have known to look at type......that is, unless he didn't know your type.

well i'm thinking he just doesn't know.. he is computer fixer and i don't think he has much science/health related knowledge lol. myself i am in the health field and i am a research junkie so i try to know as much as possible!

yes he was freaking all weekend that i gave him what i have. but i have sorted that out.

i'm going to talk to him more about it so he clearly understands...he has been pretty understanding so far of me having H2 but now i'm hoping he will be even more because he is now in a similar boat (well not really but you know what i mean)
