"Canker Sores Inside Lower Lip"

Hello everyone,

I was diagnosed with HSV 1 and 2 in August. I've never had cold sores, or genital OB. I do OBs of mouth canker sores. I joined a local herpes support group, and a man there said his doctor told him that the canker sores are a herpes OB. The doctor said it's how the virus OBs in that particular person. Other group members disagreed.

I believe my canker sores are herpes related. It's the only OB I consistently get. The sores are always along my lower lip, and excruciating. The sores puff up my lower lip which I inevitably bite while eating or something and cause it to bleed. It takes twice as long for the cankers to heal. Agh!! Now my lower lip is swollen and so painful I get headaches, my eyes tear, and don't want to eat or talk.

The only benefit is that clients and friends think I had plastic surgery due to the "fattened" lower lip. LOL. I have "pouty lips" now and everyone wants to know where I had the work done. Good grief.

I have two questions, first, do you think these canker sore OBs are herpes? If so, should I avoid kissing relatives, boyfriend, etc?

Second, can you suggest any medicine or product to speed healing and stop pain? The pain is excruciating. I am using Kanker by Blistex, which is a liquid band aid with "caine" pain medicine. It's helping somewhat.

Thank you for your time! Julia

I NEVER had canker sores prior to getting H and now I do get them - so even if I would go and get the canker sore cultured and the doctor would say no, it isn't H - I could care less what they say. Something has changed in my body and NOW I get canker sores. I can even tell you exactly what I get them from............citrus of any type in any quantity - lemon, lime, orange juice, grapefruit - I can't even eat lemon chicken or put a thin slice of lemon in a glass of water anymore. Also, anything acidic to my system can bring them out - vinegar, pickles, tomato products and anything made with them - chili, BBQ sauce, spaghetti red sauce, etc. It makes me really mad but I don't know what to do except stay away from those foods. I am hearing your pain, Julia. Man, you have it really bad -what you are describing sounds like raw nerve endings in your mouth just waiting to suck up some salt or saliva or anything - constant pain. I get them really bad like that now from orange juice - whenever I visit my mother in Florida now, my big huge treat of fresh oj is no longer an option for me. A lot of things in my system have changed since contracting H - I hate it. One H book that I have suggests that although the canker sore may not culture H specific, it can result from a "hypersensitive reaction" in a "sensitive mouth" that now "picks up on subtle signals of stress" in the mouth. I am no doctor. I have a really bad case of PHN so my case is not the norm but the pain you are describing sounds really extreme and I wonder if possibly the nerves in your mouth have become hypersensitive as a result of contracting the H virus. Perhaps it is just a canker sore, unrelated to H in any way, shape or form. I am just sharing my ideas. The really smart old-timer techies who have tremendous knowledge about medical science here will probably have a completely different idea. I wish I had some suggestion, I did all that hydrogen peroxide rinses, etc., but I would basically have to stop eating, and hold my lip out from touching my gums and try to blow my breath on it all day. They took days to heal.....grrrrrr.

Of course, you know what I am going to say - herpes doesn't cause canker sores. They are two totally different things. If your canker sores are causing you that many problems, you should see your doc.

Here is a good link that explains canker sores - http://www.medicinenet.com/canker_sores/article.htm

For causes, it says this -

What are the causes of canker sores?

The cause of canker sores is not well understood. More than one cause is likely, even for individual patients. Canker sores do not appear to be caused by viruses or bacteria, although an allergy to a type of bacterium commonly found in the mouth may trigger them in some people. The sores may be an allergic reaction to certain foods. In addition, there is research suggesting that canker sores may be caused by a faulty immune system that uses the body's defenses against disease to attack and destroy the normal cells of the mouth or tongue.

There is more info in this article, so you should check it out.

No, canker sores are not the same as HSV/cold sores. Now whether there might be some correlation, I'm not sure.

I don't often get canker sores, but I have on occasion. Here is a thread where I was asking advice about how to treat them; I got some responses that might help you. http://racoon.com/dcforum/DCForumID5/518.html

And just in terms of my personal experience, I am positive by blood test for Type II HSV, but am asymptomatic. I also do not know when I acquired it, it could be anytime from approximately 1989-2000. I have only had canker sores maybe 5 times in my entire life that I'm aware of, though I may have had them a few more times in a place along the upper gum line where I couldn't see and assumed I had just irritated a place by brushing too hard.

Hope some of those treatment ideas help.

Oh, and I'm not home where I have a "natural remedies" book, but I believe one theory is that canker sores can be related to a nutritional deficiency.

C.

Jess just posted as I did. I was also thinking that canker sores may be related to a low/faulty immune system, which is what Jess just quoted. So possibly if your immune system is fighting off something else completely unrelated, thus allowing you to have more HSV symptoms, I suppose it may make sense that your immune system may also be less able to prevent canker sores. Or if your immune system is stressed by the presence of HSV, maybe that makes it less able to prevent the canker sores. I'm not a medical person either, but I just think that *may* be a line of logic that could correlate the incease of canker sores to HSV.

Great food for thought, thanks. I especially like the info about the immune system. I am really learning a lot on this forum, by the way. Thanks for everybody's ever-vigilant research. Also, an isolated canker sore here and there is one thing, but if an individual starts seeing a pattern between canker sores, obs, pre-H and post-H, whatever, I think it is always worth some soul-searching research! There is alot of stuff medical science does know about H and there is alot of stuff medical science doesn't know about H, eh?

Hi everyone,

I have a theory. I could be wrong - happens all the time, and I can admit that.

I've never had genital OBs. Never cold sores. But as stated, I do get outbreaks of canker sores now and again. I believe it is related to H. Yes, could be a compromised immune system. Maybe H is active in my body at the time, but produces no OB, and the canker sores pop up then.

They say genital H can be contracted through oral sex - into the mouth. Internal, not external. Isn't it possible then to get internal sores; canker instead of cold sores?

I really appreciate everyone's opinion, and links to helpful information.

Have a great weekend, Julia

Herpes sores of either type are usually on the lips, or just inside them, and not IN the mouth.

Also, unless you are somehow immunocompromised (meaning cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, etc), oral hsv2 doesn't recur. You'd only have one ob and that's it.

To find out for sure, you should get these cultured the next time you have them.

I have NEVER had any canker sores before being diagnosed with HSV. I never had a trace of the virus in me until now. I was tested for EVERYTHING regularly.
My doctor has provided me with an ointment that helps relieve pain and another one to put on the OB to get rid of it fast.
I recently had a OB on my mouth coming on so i immediately put the ointment on it and it has slowed down my OB to where i barely had one at all. nobody could tell I had any cold sores, however I did tell people i was around so they wouldn't drink after me, which i feel is an important thing to do as well.
If you want to know that name of my prescriptions let me know and i will get that info to you.
good luck to you!
