"Swelling, pain--cysts?--in ears!"

OK, this is weird, but I thought I'd see if anyone knows what the heck this is or what to do for it.

I have sometimes gotten a pimple inside my ear and you can feel the lump and it hurts, then it will pop and go away. Well for a few days last week I had been noticing a pain and swelling inside my right ear and figured it was a pimple. I can't see in there at all and I managed to leave it alone, but it kept getting bigger and more painful, so on Friday night I used warm compresses jammed in my ear and (sorry this is a little icky) it loosened up and I pressed on it(OUCH btw), using a kleenex and there was blood and clear liquid, but not any white substance as you would expect from a pimple. That's when I thought maybe it had been a cyst. The swelling and pain reduced significantly, but it still hurts if I touch the spot inside my ear, or the place where your ear joins the side of your face, the bit that sort of makes the bottom of the opening of the ear.

Now, yesterday, I'm having the same feeling in my left ear! I haven't gotten the swelling, but it's painful to the touch both outside and inside the ear.

What the heck is going on?! This is not a lymph node spot, right? Is it allergies? I don't get bad allergies, but will have sinus headaches sometimes...I'm not suffering particularly from any "normal" allergy symptoms right now. And to be clear, this is not IN the EAR CANAL, it's just inside the ear (I have no idea what you call that space!) and it feels like it goes down vertically from inside the ear along the side of my face where the ear is attached.

OK, lol, I know this is weird, but it's annoying and painful and really surprised me when it started up with the left ear, too.

Thanks if anyone has any info or suggestions.

C.

C, I don't have any medical words of wisdom, but wanted to sympathize. I've not had anything exactly like that nor do I recall any of my kids, either. I've had a pimple or two there, but the clear fluid puzzles me as does the fact that it's bilateral. Where's one of our nurses when you need one?

   C. that's interesting you mention this. I never had exactly what you are describing but I have pretty frequently in my opinion (maybe once or twice a year) painful lumps inside my ear or even behind my ear. Sometimes they last for several months before they subside. They sort of feel like a cystic pimple, I don't remember mine popping ever but maybe they did and I just didn't notice. I've always wondered what they could be.

You have lymph glands in your neck below your ears - are they swollen or tender at all? It might be an "overflow" type thing. I had badly-infected tonsils for years (no doctor caught it and I'd had them for so long I didn't think of it anymore) and my ears were always having some pressure or infection problem or other. I didn't get anything like you described but maybe it's a place to start...I can't imagine why your ear would just randomly do that otherwise.

This is a bad year for allergies in a lot of places because of the longer cold season - so people who never get them are getting them, and us poor saps who get them are finding them worse than ever. Soooo that might be further aggravating the problem. Have you tried an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen or the like?

OK, if you mean the lymph nodes sorta below the jaw line, they are not noticeably swollen or painful (OK, maybe they're a little swollen?), though at one of my recent appointments (really don't remember if it was Jan. or Mar/Apr.) the doc said those glands under the jaw line were swollen (which I didn't really feel) and as I wasn't sick, she said it might be allergies.

So I don't feel like a balloon, lol, but maybe there's something to the overflow idea?

Thanks for the sympathy Rajah!

And, yeah, I figure you can probably get a cyst randomly anywhere, but when it started happening to the other ear as well, it just seems a little disconcerting.

Thanks, y'all, and maybe a few more folks will chime in.

C.

I think a doctor could help figure all this out.

   Hmph!

I don't know if it's doctor-worthy? I'm not really one to shy away from the doc, but I wasn't thinking it's a big deal. I think I'll wait a few days and see.

Yesterday, after reading the thoughts on the glands, I did feel swollen--not right under the jaw line, but like a round bump on either side of my throat--so more to the center, less under the sides of the jaw. Anyway, this morning it all seems much better, particularly the left ear is not nearly as sore and the swelling on the left side by my throat seems smaller. Though, frankly, it seems to be fluctuating a bit as the day is going on (a little more "fullness" and a tiny bit more painful).

Rrrr. If it's all basically allergies, then I don't see the point in bothering with the doc. Of course I don't know if it could indicate anything worrisome. Well, maybe in a few days I'll go. I've got a bunch of other crap I need to tend to that's stressing me out right now, so I don't really want to add a doctor's appointment to the list.

Thanks.

C.

I went through something similar a few years ago. It hurt like a bitch! I was told it might be.., get ready for this, a herpes zoster in my ear. You have no idea how upset I was by the idea of having herpes in my ear. Looking back, I would much rather it had been herpes than the HSV2 I actually DO have!

It took a while for it to clear, but it finally did. It messed with my equilibrium and the whole side of my face hurt. Even my ear was a bit deformed from the swelling.

Hope you feel better soon, C. That is a nasty thing to have to deal with!

   Oh, wow, Blue!

No, this wasn't nearly that bad. It wasn't obvious just looking at me and my equilibrium was not affected at all. Haha, THAT would have sent me to the doctor's office quickly!

It seems even better today and the glands by my throat seem less swollen too.

I'm glad yours got better and you haven't had it come back since.

C.

Clear fluid is a characteristic of a viral sore, but do you have oral HSV 1 or 2? Not to try freak you out, but I've learned that one concern with outbreaks in the nasal passage and maybe even the ear I'm assuming since they are continuous with one another thru the auditory duct, are that they can RARELY but potentially travel to the brain, but I think that unless you start getting really feverish with a huge headache should you even BEGIN to worry about it. Ah, sorry! I hate to even put that into your thoughts cause your situation is probably nothing, but better safe than sorry I say...

It's OK, no problem mentioning it.

I am only positive for HSV-II and it's probably a genital infection (I'm asymptomatic).

The whole ear thing went away. LOL, then it was followed by a nose thing which lingered for a couple of weeks and that now seems gone too. I really think it's all allergy related.

Thanks.

C.
