Yr. Infected: 1980
Prodromes: I get a burning feeling, some pain then the outbreak, or sometimes I feel nothing and find I already have an outbreak while showering or because it is"itchy".
Method of Control: The first couple of years I used Zorvirax and it worked wonderfully and I rarely had an outbreak, then because I worried about long-term effects of the drug, I stopped taking it and got rebound outbreaks - it was awful....but
eventually they stopped. I also have taken Valtrex and it worked quite well. I now only take it when I feel an outbreak coming on.
My Story: I contracted HSV2 in 1980. I don't think he knew what he had, but he never
told me about any problems until I got my first outbreak and then he told me "Oh, I've been getting those for years".....gulp. We stayed together for 4 years and then it ended, but I guess I'll always remember him because of the gift he bestowed...sigh.
I am ashamed to say that I dated and slept with other men after that and I didn't tell them - but I made sure they used condoms and I always checked carefully to make sure I didn't have an outbreak. I had terrible guilt about it, but it didn't stop me. I hope I'm forgiven for those indiscretions and I hope I never passed it on. But that was the 80's - a very long time ago.
Telling: I don't worry about telling anyone because I haven't dated anyone in a very
long time because I only want to date someone with "it". Since I am a 52 year old
woman, it is difficult enough to find a man my age who actually wanted to date
a "52 year old woman" without herpes.....It is even harder WITH herpes.
